This is, in my opinion, the most optimized Ghost-Spider Protection build out there. If you want a deck that turns the Villain phase into your own personal playground while feeling untouchable, this is for you.
The Goal: Early "Ghost-Engine" Setup
Your #1 priority is getting George Stacy and Web-Bracelets on the board ASAP. Mulligan Tip: Don't be shy about dumping cards to find your engine. Use Nick Fury aggressively to cycle. If you don't have your upgrades by turn 2 or 3, you're going to struggle. Once they're out? You've basically won.
Must-Have Core Cards
Your setup is complete once you have one of each of these on the board: Web-Bracelet (Your main source of draw and resources.) Unflappable (Extra card draw for doing what Gwen does best: defending perfectly.) George Stacy (Your "vault." Store those crucial defense events here so you're never caught off guard.)
Pros & Cons
Pros: Near-infinite "Ready" triggers, insane damage mitigation (0 damage is the norm), and a very high skill ceiling that rewards smart play.
Cons: Very resource-hungry early on. Stun is your worst enemy—it kills your momentum. You also need a few turns to set up before you truly take off.
Key Synergies & Pilot Tips
Armored Vest & Defiance : With Armored Vest, Gwen sits at a base 4 DEF. Use Defiance to cancel boost icons and guarantee a Perfect Defense (zero damage). This is the most reliable way to trigger your Unflappable and Hard to Ignore every single turn.
Hard to Ignore: This is the MVP for solving Protection's biggest weakness: lack of thwarting. Since Gwen wants to defend every turn anyway, Hard to Ignore provides consistent, passive threat removal. It allows you to keep the main scheme under control without having to exhaust your hero for a thwart action.
The Night Nurse: A mandatory inclusion. Since being Stunned completely ruins Gwen’s ability to ready after defending, Night Nurse is your insurance policy. She keeps your engine running and ensures you never waste a "Ready" trigger from your hero ability.
Ticket to the Multiverse (The "4-Resource" Logic): Standard decks usually run 5 resource cards (3 basics + 2 aspect-specifics). However, Gwen is unique because Ticket to the Multiverse acts as her signature resource card. Because of this, I only run 4 resource cards (3 basics + Ticket). This setup is more than enough to keep her engine running while freeing up a slot for other utility cards.
Enhanced Awareness:This is your tool for banking resources. If you find yourself with 3 cards left in hand and no optimal play, use them to get Enhanced Awareness on the board. It allows you to store resources for future turns, ensuring you can always afford expensive defense events or multiple Response triggers when they matter most.
Assess the Situation:While this card has high ceiling potential with Ticket to the Multiverse, don't feel pressured to save it for a combo. Its primary job is hand-cycling. If you have only 1 card left in hand, play Assess the Situation to boost your hand size for the next turn. It’s all about maintaining momentum and ensuring your next turn is as explosive as possible.
Change of Fortune: This is an incredible card for Gwen because she can often deal damage or defeat enemies during the Villain phase. If you have Unflappable and Web-Bracelet active, triggering this card allows you to draw up to 4 cards before your turn even begins. It’s one of the best ways to ensure you start your turn with a massive hand.
Black Widow: Keep her on the field specifically to cancel Gwen’s Obligation, Do not waste her on random thwarting or chump blocking unless it's an absolute emergency. Having her as a safety net allows you to stay in Hero form more aggressively without fearing the consequences of your Obligation.
Northstar vs. Defensive Stance: This is a flex slot based on your preference:
- Northstar: Excellent when you're struggling to find defense events. He can effectively stall or soak up hits for up to three turns.
- Defensive Stance: A cheaper, 1-cost alternative. It’s a one-time use, but the lower cost makes it easier to weave into a busy turn.
Tip: Choose Northstar for more sustained value, or Defensive Stance if you want to keep your curve as low as possible.
Conclusion
This build transforms Ghost-Spider into a defensive powerhouse that actually dishes out solid indirect damage and threat control. Give it a spin and let me know if you have any questions in the comments!
