2 Handed Playthrough Video Versus S2/E2 Venom Goblin

This deck is meant to be played in tandem with this Star-Lord deck.

First Turn Kill

The goal of this deck is to kill Expert Venom Goblin on turn 1 before the villain can get a turn!

Mulligan

Key cards to aim for are things that help us draw more cards like Face the Past, Maria Hill, Nick Fury, and White Tiger. If you have some combination of those, then we want to keep cards that will assist in thwarting like Get Ready, Grant Ward, and Mind Scan. Normally we want to use Soldier X to tutor in Call for Backup, but if you draw Call for Backup instead, I would use Soldier X to grab Lock and Load. We usually don't want to discard Lock and Load or IPAC unless we absolutely have to.

Player Side Scheme Targets

After using Soldier X to grab Call for Backup, we want to summon Nick Fury to jumpstart card draw. The only exception to this is if you already have Nick Fury in hand with a double resource, then I would Call for Backup Maria Hill. These are the corresponding targets if the Cable is able to clear additional side schemes:

  • Lock and Load -> Plasma Rifle

  • Superpower Training -> Plasma Rifle

  • Generation X -> Mind Scan or Telekinetic Blast

  • Keep Up the Pressure -> Telekinetic Blast (May just be used as a resource)

  • Build Support -> IPAC

Thwarting Player Side Schemes

Cable is meant to thwart as many player side schemes as possible to set the Star-Lord player up and help that player draw more cards. Here are some sequences we want to aim for to maximize thwarting and support Star-Lord:

  • Use Get Ready on allies like Grant Ward, Maria Hill, White Tiger, and Nick Fury to get additional threat removal out of them. Nick Fury is the priority to Get Ready so he will take enough consequential damage to leave play so that the Star-Lord player can play their own Nick Fury if they need to. We can also just max out on the ally limit to discard Nick. If we have sufficient thwarting, we can instead use Go Down Swinging on Nick Fury to deal extra damage but if we do this we want to save it as an out of turn action to be done during the Star-Lord's player turn when/if they want to play Nick and to make sure damage calculations are clean.

  • Face the Past to bring Stryfe in who becomes inconsequential in this 1 turn game. This readies Cable to do more thwarting and replenishes our hand (Keep in mind once Stryfe is in play, we no longer want to play psionic events like Mind Scan or Telekinetic Blast since Stryfe cancels them. We also cannot attack the villain anymore because of Face of the Past).

  • Get IPAC into play either from hand or by clearing Build Support. Use IPAC as an action out of turn when Star-Lord needs card draw or wants the extra encounter card.

  • Play Cyclops to increase the amount of damage the Star-Lord would do for every instance!

Out of Turn Actions for more Support!

When Cable ends his turn, he's not done yet! There are still some things Cable can do out of turn. The most important thing is to use IPAC to give Star-Lord an extra encounter card and draw 2 cards. We want to wait to do this during Star-Lord's turn when the card draw is absolutely necessary for Star-Lord to either to get resources or to dig for a certain card (after our deck has already been thinned out by mill cards like Gamora and Call for Aid). Cable also wants to save copies of Get Ready in his hand if possible to ready up Star-Lord's allies after Blaze of Glory has already been played. The best ally to ready is Gamora for her effect, but any other ally can still deal a lot of damage with Blaze. We can also save our Go Down Swingings and Plasma Rifle to deal even damage during Star-Lord's turn. We want to save this to evenly distribute our damage to flip Venom Goblin into stage 3 without wasting any of the attacks by Star-Lord. We can also play a Telekinetic Blast out of turn if Cable has the leftover economy for it. Don't forget that if Cable played Face the Past, he can't do either of these things because he can't attack the villain, and if Stryfe is in play he can't play Telekinetic Blast because it's a psionic event.
