Happy Father's Day, Scott!

Cyclops-Family

It's Father's Day weekend in the United States, which is a good time to celebrate our favorite mutant dad, Scott Summers. His family is... complicated to say the least, but whose isn't?

I made this deck as a tribute to Cyclops and also to highlight Assess the Situation, the excellent card featured in Winning Hand Ep. 99.

Here's the cast of characters:

  • Phoenix (Jean Grey)
    • The love of Scott's life.
  • Cable (Nathan Summers)
    • Scott's son with Madelyne Pryor (Jean's clone)
  • Marvel Girl (Rachel Summers)
    • Scott's daughter with Jean from the Days of Future Past timeline
  • Hope Summers
    • Cable's adopted daughter, raised in the far future
  • Havok (Alex Summers)
    • Scott's little brother
  • Polaris (Lorna Dane)
    • Dated Scott, before leaving him for Alex, getting engaged to Alex, then getting left at the altar by Alex who had fallen in love with the nurse taking care of him in his coma
    • its complicated

The goal of this deck is to get your family of allies out, and keep them on the table via recursion and avoiding consequential damage. Scott knows he can't do it all by himself, so he's not afraid to Call for Backup. Try to get Children of the Atom out as quickly as possible, as it unlocks the combos we want.

Families need a good Support structure. Uncanny X-Force turbo-charges our allies and allows them to avoid consequential damage when thwarting side schemes.

Scott's alter-ego ability can fetch Rapid Response (a.k.a. dad reflexes). The best targets for this are Phoenix and Polaris to trigger their enters play abilities.

Family reunions always have a little bit of Mutant Mayhem. This card is great for your expensive allies like Cable and Hope. Especially great when they have 1HP remaining, and you can thwart a side scheme or attack a minion with Coordinated Attack, then re-play them ready and healthy.

Assess the Situation

Every dad knows it's important to take time to slow down and Assess the Situation. The combo here is really straightforward, and feels extremely fun and powerful: use your last 2 resources to play Tactical Brilliance, thwart for 3, return Assess to your hand, and play it giving yourself +1 hand size for the following turn. With 3 copies of Tactical Brilliance, you should be able to do this many times throughout the game.

I find this works especially well since the turns tend to alternate between heavy thwarting and attacking. One turn, using TB to thwart and then power up for the next turn where you play something like Exploit Weakness and hit hard. It also helps power up larger hands to play an expensive ally and still afford an upgrade or two.

I started making this deck mostly for the meme / theme of it, but I think it came together really well. I've had a lot of fun playing it and I hope you do too.

Happy Father's Day!
