Groot – The Treehouse Fortress

You can attack the fortress. You can try to break through its defenses. But there's one little problem... the fortress fights back.

Welcome to The Treehouse Fortress, a Protection deck built around one simple philosophy:

Groot doesn't take damage. Groot makes enemies regret attacking him.

This isn't your typical Groot deck focused solely on accumulating growth counters. This version transforms his enormous defensive potential into offense, threat removal, and battlefield control.

The Best Offense Is a Giant Tree

The centerpiece of this deck is The Best Offense...

Why settle for using DEF only to defend when you can turn it into your offensive and thwarting power?

With the right upgrades in play, Groot can reach an impressive 7 DEF, turning him into a powerhouse capable of handling almost anything.

And that's where Stop Hitting Yourself! becomes absolutely devastating.

After defending an attack without taking damage, Groot can strike back for damage equal to his DEF.

That's potentially 7 damage for just 2 resources, simply because an enemy had the terrible idea of attacking a tree!

And here's the beautiful part: Groot's growth counters can prevent incoming damage when his DEF isn't enough.

Even when an enemy manages to hit harder than expected, those counters can help ensure Groot takes no damage and keeps his defensive engine running.

A Fortress That Never Sleeps

One defense per round? That's cute.

With Desperate Defense, Groot can ready after a successful defense and prepare to protect the team again.

The goal is to defend twice whenever possible, taking absolutely no damage in the process.

Meanwhile, every successful defense can generate additional value:

  • Hard to Ignore ×3 removes up to 3 threat from the main scheme.
  • Electrostatic Armor punishes enemies for attacking.
  • Dauntless adds even more retaliation while Groot remains at full health.
  • Stop Hitting Yourself! turns a perfect defense into a devastating counterattack.

The enemy attacks. Groot blocks. Threat disappears. Damage goes back the other way.

That's not a defensive strategy. That's an eviction notice.

One Tree, One Army

This deck deliberately runs only one ally: Rocket Raccoon.

Why?

Because Groot doesn't need an army standing behind him. He IS the army.

Ronin and Stand Alone reward Groot for operating without allies, pushing his already impressive defensive capabilities even further.

Rocket is here because, well... what's Groot without Rocket?

He can provide temporary assistance before leaving Groot to do what he does best: stand his ground.

With Armored Vest, Defensive Conditioning, Vine Shield, and the rest of his upgrades, Groot becomes increasingly difficult to hurt.

Meanwhile, Fertile Ground, Fruition, and his signature cards help manage the growth counters that keep the fortress standing.

Defense Is Everything

What makes this deck special is how its different mechanics reinforce one another.

High DEF means:

  • Less damage taken.
  • More reliable triggers for defensive events and upgrades.
  • Powerful counterattacks through Stop Hitting Yourself!
  • Better offensive and thwarting potential through The Best Offense...
  • More opportunities to preserve growth counters for Groot's signature abilities.

Instead of building separate offensive, defensive, and thwarting engines, this deck concentrates its strength into one incredible statistic.

DEF becomes the foundation of everything Groot does.

Final Thoughts

The Treehouse Fortress is designed to make Groot feel like an unstoppable force of nature.

He protects his teammates, controls the main scheme, punishes attackers, and turns his defensive strength into serious offensive power.

And unlike traditional defensive decks that simply try to survive, this one actively profits from enemies attacking.

The more they try to break through, the more Groot makes them pay.

You don't hide inside this fortress.

You ARE the fortress.

I am Groot.
