The villain's turn? That's cute. Gwen thought it was her turn.

Welcome to my upgraded Protection Ghost-Spider deck.

This version takes Gwen Stacy's incredible defensive abilities and pushes them to their limits.

The philosophy is simple: defend, ready, defend again, and make every enemy attack an opportunity to strike back.

No army of allies. No complicated setup.

Just Gwen, her reflexes, and an impressive collection of ways to make the villain regret attacking anyone.

And with a few new additions, she might just become the busiest hero at the table.

Dizzying Reflexes – The Engine That Never Stops

Everything starts with Dizzying Reflexes.

Whenever Ghost-Spider resolves an Interrupt or Response ability on an event, she can ready herself once per phase.

This seemingly simple ability completely changes how Gwen approaches the game.

Most heroes defend once and remain exhausted until their next turn.

Gwen has other plans.

With cards like Ghost Kick, Phantom Flip, Not Today!, and Jump Flip, she can turn defensive situations into opportunities to ready herself and continue protecting the team.

The important part is timing.

Gwen doesn't need to save all her tricks for the villain phase. Her ability can also trigger during the player phase, allowing her to maximize her basic powers while remaining prepared for incoming attacks.

For most heroes, exhausting is a limitation. For Ghost-Spider, it's just a temporary inconvenience.

Ready for a Fight – Always Prepared

One of the biggest upgrades in this version is 3 copies of Ready for a Fight.

Gwen's defensive engine is already excellent, but it has one important limitation: she needs opportunities to ready herself.

Ready for a Fight provides another way to keep her available for incoming attacks.

Combined with Dizzying Reflexes, Gwen can maintain an impressive defensive rhythm without relying entirely on her signature events.

This becomes particularly valuable in multiplayer games, where protecting teammates can require several defensive interventions during the same villain phase.

And because Gwen has access to Armored Vest and Defensive Conditioning, her basic defense can become remarkably reliable.

She doesn't need to absorb enormous amounts of damage.

She just needs to make sure those attacks accomplish absolutely nothing.

Stand Alone – One Woman, Three Heroes to Protect

This is where the upgraded deck becomes particularly interesting.

Stand Alone fits perfectly into a strategy that no longer relies on allies.

With Gwen fighting alone, the card provides another defensive option that complements her natural readying abilities.

Combined with Ready for a Fight, defensive events, and Dizzying Reflexes, Gwen can potentially defend for three players during the same villain phase.

And the possibilities don't stop there.

Imagine a treachery revealing an unexpected attack against Gwen.

Normally, that could be a serious problem for a hero who has already defended.

But with the right cards available, Ghost-Spider can respond to that additional attack too.

The result is a hero who can remain involved in almost every dangerous moment of the encounter phase.

Three players. Multiple attacks. One Ghost-Spider.

Who needs an army?

Taunt – Please, Make My Day

The deck now includes 3 copies of Taunt.

And Gwen has every reason to love this card.

Taunt creates an additional enemy attack while providing valuable card draw.

For many heroes, voluntarily provoking another attack sounds like a terrible idea.

For Ghost-Spider, it's practically an invitation to have fun.

Her defensive upgrades help her survive the attack, while the additional cards provide more opportunities to find defensive events, signature attacks, or the resources needed to keep her engine running.

And because Gwen can ready through her abilities and other cards, provoking an attack doesn't necessarily leave her vulnerable afterward.

This creates a particularly entertaining interaction between aggression and defense.

The villain gets another attack. Gwen gets more cards.

Somehow, that doesn't seem like a fair trade.

For the villain.

Stop Hitting Yourself! – The Ultimate Insult

The centerpiece of this deck's personality is 3 copies of Stop Hitting Yourself!.

Ghost-Spider isn't interested in simply preventing damage.

She wants to make the enemy pay for trying.

This card perfectly complements her defensive philosophy by turning enemy aggression into retaliation.

Combined with her defensive upgrades and readying abilities, Gwen can repeatedly interfere with the villain's plans while creating opportunities to punish incoming attacks.

And she still has Ghost Kick for direct damage.

That's an important distinction.

This isn't a passive defensive deck that spends the entire game waiting for something to happen.

Ghost-Spider actively contributes to defeating the villain while protecting everyone around her.

She doesn't just stop the punch. She makes the villain regret throwing it.

Not Today! – Defense Is Also Threat Control

A strong Protection deck needs more than the ability to survive attacks.

It also needs ways to keep the main scheme under control.

That's where Not Today!, Jump Flip, and Hard to Ignore become particularly valuable.

These cards allow Gwen to convert defensive situations into threat removal.

With 3 copies of Hard to Ignore, successful defenses can generate consistent progress against the main scheme.

Meanwhile, Not Today! and Jump Flip provide additional flexibility when the situation demands immediate intervention.

And thanks to Dizzying Reflexes, resolving the right event can also ready Gwen for another action.

This creates an elegant defensive cycle:

Defend an attack. Prevent damage. Remove threat. Ready. Prepare to do it again.

The villain attacks.

The scheme gets smaller.

Gwen is ready for another round.

There's something wonderfully irritating about that.

A Spider Without a Safety Net

One of the most significant changes in this version is the complete removal of conventional allies.

Instead of relying on additional characters to absorb attacks or provide support, Gwen handles the defensive responsibilities herself.

That decision reinforces the deck's identity.

Her upgrades become especially important:

  • Armored Vest improves her basic defense.
  • Defensive Conditioning reinforces her defensive capabilities.
  • Hard to Ignore rewards successful defenses with threat removal.
  • Unflappable provides additional card draw when she defends without taking damage.
  • Stand Alone supports her independent defensive approach.
  • Ready for a Fight provides additional flexibility to remain prepared.

And with Web-Bracelet, Gwen can further improve the consistency of her event-driven strategy.

Every upgrade contributes to making her more reliable, more efficient, or more difficult to overwhelm.

Unlike Groot, who survives through durability and the careful management of growth counters, Gwen relies on agility, timing, and an almost absurd ability to keep acting.

Groot is a fortress. Ghost-Spider is everywhere.

Built for Multiplayer, Ready for Anything

This version truly shines when Gwen has teammates to protect.

Her ability to defend repeatedly makes her particularly valuable in multiplayer games, where attacks can come from several directions.

But she isn't helpless when playing solo.

Ghost Kick provides reliable offensive power, while Phantom Flip gives her additional threat removal.

Her defensive events and upgrades allow her to maintain control without sacrificing too many resources.

And Taunt provides an interesting way to accelerate her card economy while taking advantage of her defensive capabilities.

The beauty of this deck is that its individual components reinforce one another.

Defending activates her upgrades.

Events create opportunities to ready.

Readying allows more defenses.

Additional defenses generate more value.

And all of it happens while Gwen continues contributing to damage and threat removal.

The villain phase isn't something Ghost-Spider survives. It's something she exploits.

Final Thoughts

This upgraded version represents everything I enjoy about Ghost-Spider.

She's fast, reactive, unpredictable, and incredibly difficult to pin down.

Ready for a Fight helps maintain her defensive availability.

Stand Alone gives her even more flexibility when protecting the table.

Taunt creates additional opportunities to draw cards and exploit her defensive strengths.

Hard to Ignore, Not Today!, and Jump Flip transform successful defenses into threat control.

And Stop Hitting Yourself! makes sure the villain remembers every bad decision.

The result is a hero who can potentially protect three players, respond to unexpected attacks, control the main scheme, and retaliate without abandoning her defensive responsibilities.

She's not the strongest hero.

She's not the toughest hero.

But when the villain starts throwing punches, there's nobody else I'd rather have standing between the enemy and the team.

Go ahead. Attack her friends.

Gwen was hoping you'd try.
