After seeing the recently revealed Ronan the Accuser print and play modular set, we knew we wanted to get him on the table. With only one scenario we hadn't played on Heroic, we also knew we had to pair him with the first Green Goblin Scenario - Risky Business.
Steven wanted to keep playing with his most recent flame, Thor We We're Swinging Deck. Meanwhile, I wanted to try something new, so I decided to play Black Widow for the first time.
In the first game, I paired her with Justice (the aspect that comes in her pack). About halfway into the game though, it was pretty obvious I would need to switch to Protection or Leadership. Thor needs someone who can fend off attacks and minions to buy him time to just be swinging that hammer. Since we'd played Thor Aggression with my Spider-Man Protection the week before, I decided to switch to leadership in our second game.
Of course, Black Widow is built to be played with preparation cards. My favorite preparation is Rapid Response. The ability to recur allies is super powerful, especially when they have play effects like Nick Fury, Maria Hill, or even Hawkeye getting a fresh round of arrow tokens. This paired with Safe House #29 has to be one of the most powerful economic engines you can build in Black Widow, as she can keep getting rapid responses back to ensure she has plenty of Allies in play all game.
I also really love Espionage. Combining it, again, with Safe House #29, Natasha Romanoff's own ability, and the play effects of cards like Nick Fury and Maria Hill triggering multiple times from Rapid Response, you can have some massive hands.
The most impressive, and terrifying, thing to me when playing Black Widow is how precise and versatile she is. Had I been a bit better with her in our first game, I could have at least bought us another turn by simply grabbing a different preparation card with Safe House #29. In our second game though, I was starting to get the hang of it and understanding which preparation cards to play or grab based on what was going on in the game.
If you want to feel like a spy who measures every step they take, Black Widow is definitely the hero for you.

Aug 13, 2020`@BlitzMonkey perhaps I was doing it wrong, but I stayed in Hero form and kept using Nick Fury to block for me, and when he'd be defeated, I'd play Rapid Response to bring him right back, activating his triggers and then using the Safe House card to bring Rapid Response back into my hand. I just went and looked up an old Team Covenant stream discussing this card when the Black Widow deck was announced, so let me know if I'm doing this correctly or not: youtu.be |
Aug 13, 2020@BlitzMonkey as I typed and re-read that I think I see my error now... Nick Fury should have still been discarded at the end of the round (enemy phase) where I brought him back, shouldn't he? Darn. |

Tried this deck out last night and instantly fell in love. The Rapid Response combo with Safe House #29 allowed me to bring back Nick Fury 4 turns in a row (also had 2 Black Widow's Gauntlets in play to pay for RR each time), which allowed for some monster turns. My only question about the deck is Iron Man; I know it's good to have allies in this deck but with his high cost and useless ability (in this deck) I felt he was unnecessary to have and I only ever used him as a resource. Maybe I'm missing something there, but I highly recommend trying out this deck!
