Minimalist Matchups

The goal is to create a series of decks meant to be accessible to players who don't have access to all of the content. It can be tough to find decks that feel strong and work in a limited collection. So this series will be heroes built to take on the toughest villains using only the Core Set, Villain's Campaign Box (if applicable), and Hero Pack (if applicable). This means each deck will only require 2 or 3 packs.

Minimalist Matchup Decks:

Yo, Robot!

Gambit can take on Ultron robots and use his easy access to overkill and spread damage to maintain minion control, use statuses to control the flow of minions, and allies to help with threat and drones.

Early Tempo Control

There are two keys to staying in control of Ultron: stay on The Crimson Cowl for as long as absolutely possible and don't let drone minions stay out for long.

So the cards that you want to aim for in your mulligan are: Tigra, Gambit's Staff, or War Room. If none of those are available, get 1 ally out. Tigra and War Room are going to be your best combo for accomplishing early tempo control, and Gambit's Staff will knock out the new drone from Ultron's attack interrupt.

Hit and Run is useful if you need to stall a round. It'll take out a minion and keep the main scheme in check for one extra round. It's pretty rare to get a bad hand, but it happened once, and Hit and Run was a round saver.

Utilize Statuses

4 cards in this deck hand out statuses. It's important to use them, even if it means using Creole Charmer to remove 1 threat on the main scheme. The same can be said for Mockingbird's stun. It's a great tempo changer, especially if you got minion swarmed early. Professor X is great for his confuse status as well. After you use him to block, flip down the next round to take advantage of the confuse and your 6 hand size.

Go for Overkill

Once you have a good rhythm of Tigra and War Room keeping you on the first main scheme, start using your overkill and attack to do damage. Charge up Relentless Assault and Charged Card so you're removing a minion and doing 5-7 damage in overkill to Ultron. This is especially great in Ultron III where you don't want to be wasting damage. Tigra can take out one drone minion, the overkill can take out the last drone minion and do damage to Ultron.

Royal Flush is also a great all-purpose card. Either you can use damage spread to take out drone minions or do maximum damage to Ultron.

All in all, Remy's damage spread and access to overkill will whittle down Ultron as long as you keep the main scheme in check. It's okay to lose the first main scheme, especially once you get Gambit's Staff, Tigra, and War Room out. Keep using allies and Hit and Run to maintain board while you get those combo cards out, using confuses to help you flip down to heal and get a bigger hand size.

Awesome! I love Tigra & War Room to manage the drones and threat. So simple, yet so effective!

Thanks, @Greg! It was cool to see War Room be so useful. I also love that it doesn’t even have to be your ally that defeats a minion if you’re playing multiplayer.

minimalist decks is such a great project tbh. Hit and Run i think is one of the first cards that people cut when upgrading Gambit, but it's perfectly fine (and better than Haymaker, and i remember when people used that one lol)

good stuff.

Thanks, @dr00! It’s been a fun series. It’s also cool to see that the designers did a great job with balance. I’ve always found it challenging, but never out of reach, which surprised me a little (especially Spidey against Ronan).

And I’m with you that Hit and Run isn’t a bad card, especially if you just need to keep your head above water for a round.

I really like this series of decks you are doing! I think people get caught up in min/maxing too much and forget how simpler decks can accomplish a lot too.

It took me a handful of tries to defeat Ultron on standard with this deck. You're right that War Room and Tigra really help out a lot. I struggled a lot if I wasn't able to get them down early. The other problem I ran into was not having a physical resource on hand to trigger the overkill for Relentless Assault. The deck seems a bit light on physical resources. I haven't put much thought into how I would mitigate this while maintaining the spirit of your deck build, but yeah, that was a common problem for me.

Thanks again, and I'm looking forward to your other decks in this series!

Thanks for the comment and experience @erikw1984! I'm sorry it was a struggle to get a win. I think some of it might be that the write up possibly didn't explain board management until you get War Room (Tigra is a nice combo, but any ally trigger is great). Once you get minion management and board state you can use the overkill on your events or just start attacking Ultron head on. So there's a lot of patience and passing up on bigger damage to just hold on Main Scheme 1B. That might help up the win percentage.

As far as physical resources, what's crazy is that I included every physical resource card except Uppercut or Combat Training. With just the Core Set and Gambit's pack, there aren't a lot of physical resources in Aggression. Now, you could trade out Avengers Mansion or a Combat Training or rebalance Hit and Run/Relentless Assault with Uppercut. In my play testing, Uppercut and Combat Training were more wasted damage than useful damage.

I hope that can help change the tide on Ultron with you in this deck, and I'm grateful you commented with your experience! It helps in evolving this but also good concerns for building the others in the series. I test a lot in expert, but this one, I didn't do much in standard. And it's funny to realize that Ultron 1 with Drone/Threat might be harder to hold onto Main 1B, especially since the staff won't take out the drone from Ultron's attack.

I think some of it was just back luck on my part too. I had at least three deaths that were initially caused by some bad encounter draws that resulted in multiple attacks (which I did not chump block with Tigra), which got me down to 1 HP, then right on cue, Concussive Blast shows up to kill my character.

I totally get that with Concussive Blast. I feel like any time I defend with an ally with one health left, that’s when it’s gonna be the boost, or if I’m at one health, that’s when it’ll be my encounter card.
