This deck is intended to support Ant-Man (https://marvelcdb.com/decklist/view/57573/ant-man-s-turn-at-leadership-1.0) in the fourth and final scenario of my tutorial series, this time against Ultron. The new player will put everything they've learned to the test with their Leadership deck, and will be relied on for almost all thwarting, plus a good bit of damage. Your job is to clear the table of drones and drop the occasional damage bomb.
Thor's main ability involves drawing cards when a minion engages him, and lots of Aggression cards play right into this: Angela, Get Over Here!, Relentless Assault, Spoiling for a Fight, etc. None of those cards are in this deck.
The issue with the cards above is that they work well with minion-heavy decks or play into archetypes like overkill decks (which, for the record, would be amazing against Ultron). Ultron, however, is a minion-heavy encounter but not a minion-heavy deck, so cards like Spoiling for a Fight will wipe out half the encounter deck, and Ultron is not a villain with whom you you want acceleration tokens. Overkill has its benefits (and we'll see them here) but leaning into that takes away from what we do want to lean into, which is clearing the board and drawing cards.
For Basic cards, The Bifrost is not included, as it would really just be a Throg tutor card. You can include it if you want instead of something else if you want to keep bringing Throg out, but he's not so integral to the build that this seemed necessary. Beat 'Em Up and Lightning Strike will clear your side of the board of drones, which is helpful if the new player has a few copies of Army of Ants in play to handle their own drones, but Dive Bomb is the real MVP since it clears both sides and drops a big bit of damage on the villain. Face the Past can be used to pull Thor's nemesis out, ready and draw up to 5 cards, and Loki should be pretty easy to one-shot if both Mjolnir and Aggressive Conditioning are in play. Godlike Stamina and Suppressing Fire will be your main sources of healing.
This deck really focuses on card draw to really get you the cards you need: Have At Thee! will draw 2 cards when Thor is engaged with a minion, and this occurs once per phase, meaning that he can draw 2 cards when he pulls out a drone during Ultron's villain phase, then again on his own player phase if you use something like Face the Past or Target Spotter. Ultron drones can pile on fast and that makes "Bring It!" an insanely powerful card, sometimes drawing 5 or more cards. With the high number of cards that clear drones like Dive Bomb, Boom Boom (who's action can be used to clear the board the turn she's played) or Beat 'Em Up, "Bring it!" almost guarantees you'll be able to completely clear the board of minions and then still do some other stuff, and this naturally pairs incredibly with Hall of Heroes. Thor will want to be flipping down unusually often to take advantage of this, and will basically be able to start using Hall of Heroes on every AE turn as soon as it's played because of how many drones it takes out. With all this card draw, it should be easy to drop Dive Bomb or Hammer Throw relatively often to bring Ultron down at a reasonable pace.
Thor's basic thwart is pretty useless and you probably never want to do that, and his main hero threat-removal card, Defender of the Nine Realms, is something you only want to use in emergency situations because, as mentioned above, it'll eat through the encounter deck and Ultron doesn't have a lot of leeway with the main schemes. The new player should be handling the threat pretty well enough since Ant-Man is a solid thwarter and Ultron's threat doesn't increase too quickly, but this is where the main use of excess damage comes in: Into the Fray will take out 5 threat when used against a drone, and can be a life saver if the new player is slipping a bit behind. Aside from that, you're probably going to be the one with enough excess resources to be responsible for removing attachments from Ultron, the most dangerous of which is his Upgraded Drones since it makes your entire job instantly get out of hand.
This deck has been tested as described in the Ant-Man deck.
