UPDATES

Four major changes:

OUT: Helicarrier. IN: Quincarrier. Quincarrier's wild resource triggers Concussive Blow, For Justice!, and Lightning Strike. Thanks Black Widow.

OUT: All copies (2) of Surveillance Team. IN: Copies (2) of Counterintelligence. It's much more important to prevent threat from the villain's scheming (especially from Advance) than to whittle away at threat. Thanks again Black Widow.

OUT: All copies (2) of Followed. IN: Heimdall and another copy (now 3) of Concussive Blow. Both these cards can deal damage, they're not side scheme-dependent, and both have a thwarting effect, too, with Heimdall potentially removing 8 threat over his life and Concussive Blow's confusing the villain.

OUT: One copy (now 1) of Interrogation Room. IN: Another copy (now 2) of Under Surveillance. You only need one of either, it's true, but it's so much more clutch to get out Under Surveillance, and the extra one can always be used to trigger Lightning Strike. Additionally, sometimes even with Under Surveillance the first stage of a main scheme is completed and it's not bad to have a second copy maybe ready to go on the next stage of the main scheme.

The core of the deck is unchanged, but these changes make it even more reliable and easy to switch into alter-ego and utilize Mjolnir as a resource using Worthy.

DECK NOTES

A key to this deck is using Mjolnir as a resource. Unlike Steve Rogers, Odinson's ability is an Action rather than Setup, meaning you can and should be drawing and spending Mjolnir as many turns as possible (even every turn). This essentially allows Thor's hand size to be +1 most turns.

For example, a great first two turns might look like this:

Turn 1: Draw a resource card (like Genius), a 4-cost ally (Nick Fury, Daredevil, or Lady Sif), and God of Thunder. Summon Mjolnir. Spend the resource card to play God of Thunder. Switch to Thor. Use God of Thunder, Mjolnir, and the other two cards in hand to play the 4-cost ally. Thwart with Thor and the ally (if facing Breakin' & Takin' or The "Immortal" Klaw.

Turn 2: Attack with Thor, use God of Thunder and a card to play a 2-cost card like Under Surveillance. Switch to Odinson. Summon Mjolnir. Use Mjolnir and the other card to play another 2-cost card.

On the following turn, summon Mjolnir again and it's your choice whether to spend it as a resource or play it to boost your attack and allow for Hammer Throw.

Just remember, playing Hammer Throw later in the game, you can go on another spree of switching back and forth between hero and alter ego using Mjolnir as a resource until you want or need to play it again.

This use of Mjolnir as a resource allows you to have the hand size to focus on taking care of early issues (like a bad side scheme). It's still very helpful to get out Asgard or Avengers Mansion (you don't necessarily need both), but lean into the Mjolnir-as-resource until you have one of those out later on. Prioritize mulliganing into a strong opening hand to deal with early threats (like a 4-cost ally or Jessica Jones) rather than searching for Asgard.

Use For Asgard! to trigger Concussive Blow. Use Thor's Helmet or Lightning Strike to trigger For Justice!.

You can wait for just the right moment to play the 1-cost Support/Upgrade cards (Down Time, Endurance, Interrogation Room). Remember this cardinal rule: END EVERY TURN WITH AN EMPTY HAND.

The deck rewards clever, intelligent use of Mjolnir as a resource. If you play it right, I think you will really enjoy this dynamic.

Have fun in Hel's Kitchen!

Great deck! I've leveraged a slightly modified version of the old on, but adding in the Widow cards will make this an even stronger one. I'm thinking this could pair well for some heroic attempts.

This is definitely better than the old one. Thanks Black Widow.

Right? The old one felt like I finally “got the car up and running” with Thor, and this one feels like it’s actually driving smooth and reliably.

I think Agent Coulson (also from Black Widow) could be a valuable addition too. He's a cheap ally with 2 thwart, and allows you to draw/recur Counterintelligence from discard.

Yeah maybe replacing a Lockjaw?

Jun 25, 2020 bitsai · 1

Yeah, or possibly Heimdall? He is no doubt a powerful card, but with a cost of 5, there's a good chance he's not playable if you draw him while in hero form. All else being equal, I prefer cards I know I can play no matter when I happen to draw them. But that's just my $0.02.

Thank you for sharing a well-crafted, enjoyable deck!

Yeah, I go back and forth on Heimdall! On the one hand, he’s sometimes too expensive. However, all you technically need in hero form is a double resource card or Quincarrier or Asgard or Avenger’s Mansion, just one of any of those, you flip go alter-ego, grab Mjolnir, and you can play him. 8 threat over his life is so much good threat removal! And his enter play ability is perfect for killing Loki. That said, Lockjaw is so handy for those times you get a bum hand, especially in hero form.

Thanks for the thanks, so glad you enjoy it!

I kind of hate this deck, but I really respect your dedication to tweaking it. Play on, sir!

What is Lockjaw's place in this deck?

Aug 27, 2020 KingOfRohan · 5080

@MrDragonFox My thinking with Lockjaw goes like this:

  • Use him as a resource from hand. (A resource, too, to trigger Concussive Blow). Never ever play him from hand.
  • Spend exactly your 4-card hero hand to play him from discard pile to remove 2 threat as needed and then remove another 2 threat or block.

How do you feel about replacing For Justice! with Lay Down the Law?

Nov 11, 2020 KingOfRohan · 5080

I'd have to look more into it, but my gut says no since the resource of For Justice could be helpful for Lightning Strike, and For Justice was typically getting it's resource from The Power of Justice, for which it's a great target - and as often as Thor is switching back and forth early game, I do think he likes to stay in hero longer once he's got Mjolnir down. That being said, I haven't played this deck in quite some time and I need to revisit Thor in pretty much all aspects as soon as I have time!
