I thought it might be nice to publish decks that use more readily available product, as there are likely some new players joining that are looking to use what they can purchase rather than feel left out for not having all the OOP cards. For the first set of this series, I'm going to stick to core set heroes. This should help give new players an idea of what they should buy after getting the core set and playing the game a few times.
This build uses the core set, Civil War, Fear No Evil, and Hercules. These should be fairly readily available, though FNE is in high demand as of this deck's creation.
I cannot stress enough that FNE is a must-buy if you can find it, as it includes some excellent cards and two cool heroes, Daredevil and Echo. In fact, if all you do is get a core set and FNE, you will have a great roster of hero decks available to play and several scenarios that will test your skill!
Civil War likewise has two heroes, Hulkling and Tigra, that are fun to play and the customization options for scenarios in that expansion will provide a lot more unique play opportunities, even if the main schemes are a bit bland.
Hercules has a tricky play mechanic with his labor side schemes, and might not be as beginner friendly as the other four heroes mentioned above.
Anyway, on to the deck.
Spidey has a 3 DEF which is huge in this game. The trade off is he has a 1 THW, so you're going to want to stay in hero form to keep threat on the main scheme low while also handling side schemes as they show up. Protection aspect historically hasn't had many good ways to thwart via events. Thankfully FNE introduces two cards, Get Their Attention and In Harm's Way. The former activates on the villain's turn and the latter on your turn, which is perfect for Spidey. More than likely you will exhaust him to defend during the villain's turn and won't be able to basic attack on your turn, so playing In Harm's Way or Swinging Web Kick can cover that drawback for you.
Of course, if you happen to Backflip for the villain's attack, then you get to basic attack as usual.
FNE also offers four protection upgrades, Innate Reflexes, Ronin, Stand Alone, and The Best Offense..., all of which will help support your defense strategy.
Innate Reflexes (and the other subsequent "Innate" titled upgrades mentioned in this deck series) has the starting keyword and no printed resource. The starting keyword lets you add it to your hand before drawing up to your hand size at the start of the game. This isn't an "in addition to" your hand size; think of it as the first card you draw for your starting hand but you get to pick it instead of it being random off the top of the deck. With no printed resource, it behooves you to play this card on the first turn since you can't use it to pay for anything. That's okay though because the "Innate" upgrades have good bonuses that usually help strategies in their respective aspects.
Civil War provides Cuts Both Ways, which gives you retaliate 1 for the rest of the phase. Play this when the villain attacks, and it will also affect any minions that attack you that phase as well. Defensive Conditioning gets you another +1 DEF and more hit points.
Ronin, Stand Alone, and In Harm's Way will check for allies, so you should pass on playing Black Cat once you get setup. As an early play she's worth it but later on she will hamper your strategy a bit.
As of this deck's creation, Quincarrier is available in the Hercules hero pack. You can only play it while in hero form, but can then use it no matter which form you are in after that. Avengers Mansion and Helicarrier are likely going to be standard inclusions for your decks when starting out. They're pricey but worth it, opening up your player phase options significantly as well as offering multiplayer assistance.
In conclusion: Buy Fear No Evil and Civil War. Both are great additions to your Marvel Champions experience. With Hercules, you will have five new heroes and a massive amount of re-playable custom villain scenarios to play!
