I've been tinkering with this deck for a while trying it with different heroes and I feel this is the most consistent and powerful version of the deck.
The Core Loop
The core you are trying to do with this deck is play Otto (Spider-Man) from hand and ready either your Arc Reactor or your Powered Gauntlets and draw a card. Each time you do this it is 2 thwart or damage depending on what you need.
Of course to play Otto you will need a Web-Warrior card in play, which is where Spider-Man 2099 turns the basic concept into something more with his ability to bounce Otto back to hand. Combined with the Web of Life and Destiny you get the 2 cards to play Otto each time you do this loop. 1 when you play him and once when he leaves play back to your hand.
Everything else is about how to exploit the loop more and do it as many times as possible on a turn.
The Keys to Success
- Peter Parker (Spider-Man) Gives you an additional ready of 2099.
- Command Team gives you an additional ready of Peter Parker.
- Mission Planning means your allies don't take consequential damage so you can run the loop over and over again without losing Peter or 2099. You need a side scheme in the victory display for Mission Planning and both Build Support and Call for Backup are helpful for you (and hopefully the table.
The Gas
- Righteous Purpose buffs your characters with 1 health remaining, which when combine with Mission Planning gives you incredibly strong allies that activate multiple times in a turn.
- Warrior of the Great Web on both Peter and 2099 gives then additional attack each time Otto leaves play.
- Sidearm protects your 1 health allies from retaliate, allowing then to deal a lot of damage to close out a game.
Why Iron Man
I like Iron Man because he has great economy and the ability to cycle cards to get the stuff you need right now in alter ego. Building the suit and building the core can happen alongside each other and you have the best chance of drawing Mission Planning every turn once you are ready to go. Iron Man can also shift from thwart to damage easily.
I tried this with Ironheart and I found that she takes too long to get herself up and running. She can't do both builds simultaneously, she needs to focus on one other the other. While her two upgrades should offer the same bonuses that Iron Man offers with his, in practice she just doesn't offer the same bonuses of economy, deck cycling, and deck thinning.
I brought a similar deck with SP//dr to Con of Heroes 2025 that used R&D Teams, healing and Reinforced suits to keep things going. Sp//dr is good at economy but really show at getting through her deck. So while I think the same build should work, just switch the Quincarrier for The Triskelion. it will take longer to get to the pieces. She does have the advantage of being a Web-Warrior which makes it easier to play some of the pieces. It will play a bit differently. For Sp//dr she won't get the extra thwart or attack each turn, but she will get an extra resource each time Otto cycles, which means she can slowly draw more cards which might allow her to hit one or her threat or attack events. All that extra draw should also allow you to find and hold a Mission Planning for next turn as well.
I haven't yet tried this with Star-Lord who is awesome at borrowing another team. Star-Lord easily overcomes the cost restrictions of some elements of the deck, but suffers from the fact that your tech upgrade also takes resources to use so you don't get the same level of extended loop from him.
Finally Some Math
Assuming you have the pieces in play then Peter and 2099 deal 5 damage base, +1 each time Otto leaves play.
First Loop
- Play Mission Planning & go aerial
- use Otto 2 damage
- Use Powered Gauntlets 2 damage
- Use 2099 5 damage & bounce Otto Total 9 damage
Second Loop
- Play Otto and ready Powered Gauntlets
- use Otto 2 damage
- Use Powered Gauntlets 2 damage
- Use Peter 6 damage & ready 2099
- Use 2099 6 damage & bounce Otto Total 16 damage
Subsequent Loops
- use Command Team to repeat the loop, each time adding 2 damage from Warrior of the great web,
- so 18, 20, and 22 damage with just 3 Command Teams.
- 75 damage total
- Finally play any damage you you manage to draw into like Supersonic Punch.
And as good as it is at damage, it is also great at thwart during the game.
I got to play alongside this tonight and once it gets cooking, it can really get the job done. Great deck!
