"I am Groot!"
"This is the way!"
The Guardian(s) and Grogu(e)
Overview
Groot protects his friends with his strong DEF as he builds up his growth counters and uses some fun ally combos.
General Setup Cards
-
DEF boosting with Armored Vest, Defensive Conditioning, Specialized Training, and early Vine Shield is important to preserve counters.
-
Deft Focus gives a discount for almost all of Groot's cards.
-
Unflappable is basically a free card draw the 1st time you defend in a round if you have high enough DEF and/or growth counters.
-
Fertile Ground gives an extra growth counter and a card when in alter-ego form.
Starhawk's ability allows him to go back into your hand and after some setup, the plan is to do that most turns and replay him.
The Razor Crest Starhawk Engine:
-
Team-Building Exercise reduces his cost when you're in hero form.
-
Knowhere lets you draw a card after you play him.
-
Rogue can deal 1 damage to him with her ability when convenient.
When the Starhawk Engine is fully setup, he effectively refunds all costs of replaying him each turn.
Grogu Rogue has strong powers but relies on others to use them effectively.
-
Rogue will use her ability and help out with whatever needs doing.
-
Starhawk is the safest target because of his ability to constantly return.
-
Targeting Groot only uses 1 growth counter or 1 HP if you're out and is still a good 2nd option if Starhawk is not available.
-
Rocket Raccoon can provide a little more THW if needed.
-
Multiplayer opens up additional targets.
Din Djarin Rocket Raccoon can provide emergency thwarting early and is strong when attacking minions. He also enables Flora and Fauna for more growth counters and a ready.
IG-11 Charlie-27 is the primary target for Stronger Together when in play for the retaliate. Enemy attacks, Charlie defends, and Stronger Together hopefully blocks all damage and the retaliate hits the enemy.
The Rest of the Deck
-
The Med Teams keep your allies healthy.
-
Stronger Together is versatile. It can protect your allies from enemy damage when they defend for you or block consequential damage or the damage from Rogue's ability when needed.
-
Ready for a Fight allows Groot to dip into alter-ego to get more growth counters and use Fertile Ground and Hidden Base if available and get back to hero form faster to defend.
-
Hidden Base is more useful the earlier in the game you are. It's not as important once you have more DEF available and can defend without taking damage.
-
The Helicarrier is always nice to have.
Other Thoughts
- Thwarting is pretty rough early with this deck, so you'd probably want to add more thwart options like Hard to Ignore for solo.
Hope you enjoy this deck and let me know how it works out if you try it!
