"Whatever I need, whenever I want it!"
- "Close the door. Put out the light."
- "I am Groot?"
- "No I won't be home tonight."
- "I am Groot."
- "What do you mean it's too hard to use No Quarter in a Honed Technique deck?"
- "I AM Groot."
- "No I planned for that. We have four resources early and then two upgrades later on."
- "I'm Groot?"
- "Of course I'm gonna use Dive Bomb, it's a Honed Technique deck! I'm just not gonna clutter up my deck with stuff I don't want until later!"
- "I am GROOT."
- "Yes I can! Why do you think I'm wearing these Thruster Boots?"
- "I AM GROOT!"
- "Don't worry! I got ways to find whatever I need, whenever I want it."
Only one Dive Bomb in a Honed Technique deck? It is useless until you put on your Thruster Boots to make Rocket Aerial AND you have Honed your Technique. It is more of a board clearing, eleven point finisher. Feel free to add another for multiplayer (or if you want to play it more than once a game) but I prefer just leaving Keep Up the Pressure and/or Aggressive Stance on the table until things are just right. However, it is a physical resource which can help to play No Quarter before you get Martial Prowess down. I wouldn't go with less than 12-14 physical (and wild) resources.
Because Aggressive Stance gets shuffled back in unlike Keep Up the Pressure, you can use it to fetch another No Quarter in the midgame to draw cards when a minion shows up. Then later it can set up your big finish.
One "Bring It!" or Assess the Situation could be fine, but space is tight and you definitely need some allies to block. Mockingbird is a life saver and Throg is a must play whenever you are engaged with a minion (with Spider-Girl as the next best option. Sunfire struggled to always have an energy resource without access to a wild resource generator but is still helpful against Villains with nasty attachments. Ironheart just hit the table more so she made the cut.
You may be surprised to learn that the last ally I cut was Angela. As much as Rocket likes overkilling minions to draw cards with his "Murdered You" ability, a better way to think about it is that the card draw helps you deal with threats on the board so if there is nothing to blow up, then that is when you aim at the Villain. Six damage for 3ER is fine even without any card draw. But toss her in there if the minions you are facing aren't too big.
Lie in Wait + Face the Past are also a very solid duo I have used in this build because Blackjack O'Hare is a Villainous nemesis with Quickstrike...but only has three health. No soup for you!
First time through the deck the essentials are Thruster Boots, Honed Technique, Ingenuity, and Cybernetic Skeleton. Helicarrier too if you can. And allies to protect our fragile, furry friend.
Martial Prowess and Helicarrier are not necessary on the first deck pass but will help on the second and third. You eventually want your Particle Cannon which should stay on the board the entire game. Locked and Loaded can help with that. It is a great early play but I usually choose to play it or not based on how much thwarting Rocket has to do right out of the gate. That said, I still run L+L vs expert Klaw.
Once Honed Technique is down, your No Quarters hit for six and can be paid for with either The Power of Aggression or Salvage. Once you have both Ingenuity and Martial Prowess you can play No Quarter whenever you want with no problem!
With all the resources in the deck you should play Psylocke every time you see her. In my opinion she is the most cost efficient ally in the game. I know that most of the community values a Stun or Confuse as worth about 2ER but in my opinion I value a Stun (or Tough or last HP of a blocking ally) at 2ER and a Confuse at 3ER! Maybe a hot take, but here goes...they each stop a Villain activation but a Confuse also gets you an extra card in Alter Ego. It is worth even more than that if the hand size difference is two more with heroes like Colossus or She Hulk (where I would value a Confuse at 4 ER) or with AE abilities like Captain Marvel, Spider-Man, or Gambit. I think that this is the main reason everyone is loving Ready for a Fight so much.
I am interested if I am the only one who thinks this way - let me know if you agree or not! Because if you do agree, then Psylocke will do 2 damage (1ER) and a Confuse (3ER), another 2 damage (1ER) and a Confuse (3ER), and then block with her last HP (2ER). That is 10ER for a cost of 5ER! If the Villain has Tough it is even more. And in this deck if you also can Tinker both trips to Alter Ego she is bonkers!
And I know somewhere a Fanatic is screaming "Nope! Nick Fury is the best ally in the game." When it comes to digging through your deck to find essential cards he is amazing (not to mention attacking, thwarting, and blocking) so no arguments there. And of course there are Steady and Stalwart Villains to be considered but Psylocke can still Confuse a Steady Villain over two turns - not even Professor X can do that! I also think Iron Fist deserves a little more love (he was my favorite before Psylocke). But anyway, back to the deck...
I originally had Avengers Mansion but I often had to deal with threats and couldn't take another tempo hit since you essentially burn a turn when you play Honed Technique. The deck ran so much better when I switched it to Helicarrier. All of a sudden all of those one cost Pistols and Batteries were coming down for free which begins a consistent cycle of:
- Using Salvage to put Battery Pack on top of the deck
- Responding to excess damage from Particle Cannon or No Quarter with "Murdered You" to draw the Battery (BEFORE discarding for Aggression cards in the second sentence of NQ)
- Playing the Chase Them Down or Moment of Triumph you just drew from No Quarter
- Using the Battery Pack to restock your Cannon (or even a Pistol)
- Confusing the Villain with Psylocke or the Professor
- And flipping down to recover and use Rocket's Tinkering ability on the used up Battery/Pistol to draw two cards. Damn it feels good to be a gangster!
Into the Fray is not really needed in solo and is better in multiplayer especially since you have two cards that can tutor for it. The nice thing about tutoring for events is you can throw in one Firepower or Relentless Assault and the deck will function the same. What about Hall of Heroes? Sure! Especially in multiplayer.
Where is Follow Through? I tried 3 then 2 then 1 and eventually switched it for a Hand Cannon which can have a much more immediate impact on the game. You can also Salvage it to the top of your deck to guarantee a draw from No Quarter before using "Murdered you"! And yes, I tried Hulk in the deck. It was a fun but inconsistent combo. Warrior Skill is worse than your Pistols and even they don't always see playing time. I also never missed a Side Holster as two weapons on the board seems to be plenty.
Endurance (or another Moment of Triumph) can help when there is a lot of indirect damage that you cannot chump block. And this deck may be a future home for Aggressive Conditioning for the same reason. An 18 health Rocket? Move over, Hulk!
Hopefully this gives you an idea about how to play the deck and the many good options you have to customize it to your playstyle, collection, or the Villain you are facing. Let me know what you think especially with regards to how you value Confuse!
Nice deck! Rocket is such a good fit with No Quarter. I really like how you went through alternate cards and described how you settled on these 40. I think Aggression is maybe the aspect that requires the most tailoring towards villains and their encounter decks, so seeing the other cards you considered is really helpful.
